
UltraSound: Patient Guide
Do I need to prepare for the test?
It depends on the type of ultrasound scan you plan on receiving. For more information, please refer to the guides below;
Group A: Abdomen, Pancreas, Kidneys, Gall Bladder, Spleen, Aorta, Liver
Requires fasting.
Do not eat or drink for 12 hours prior to your appointment.
Group B: Ovaries, Bladder, Uterus, G.U. Tract, Pregnancy (Obstetrical/Nuchal translucency)
Requires a full bladder at the time examination.
Drink at-least 4 cups of water, 1 hour prior to your appointment. Do not empty your bladder prior to the examination.
Do not go to the washroom prior to your examination. If you have any discomfort please let the front desk staff or the technologist know so they may advise you accordingly.
Group C: Pelvic & Abdomen
Requires both fasting for 12 hour and a full bladder.
Do not eat or drink for 12 hours prior to your appointment.
Drink at-least 4 cups of water, 1 hour prior to your appointment. Do not empty your bladder prior to the examination.
Do not go to the washroom prior to your examination. If you have any discomfort please let the front desk staff or the technologist know so they may advise you accordingly.
Group D: Renal
Do not eat or drink 3 hours prior to your appointment.
Group E: Renal & Bladder
Requires a full bladder at the time examination.
Do not eat or drink 3 hours prior to your appointment. However, make sure to drink at-least 4 cups of water, 1 hour prior to your appointment.
Group F: Prostate with Transrectal
Requires a full bladder at the time examination and a fleet enema 2 hours before the exam.
Do not eat after midnight prior to the day of your examination.
Drink at-least 4 cups of water, 1 hour prior to your appointment. Do not empty your bladder prior to the examination.
Please note laxatives (fleet enema) is only needed for prostate with transrectal. For regular prostate ultrasound you do not need a laxative.
Group G: Obstetric
Drink at-least 4 cups of water, 1 hour prior to your appointment. Do not empty your bladder prior to the examination.
